The Amazon, the lungs of our planet, is one of the most essential and also one of the most threatened bioregions in the world. We believe that the best way to protect the Amazon is from within - through the efforts of the indigenous people themselves. We have co-founded The Living School of the Amazon, in conjunction with the indigenous nations of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters, to consolidate and strengthen their leadership.

This leadership school will enable future generations of leaders of the Ecuadorian Amazon to build more resilience for Mother Earth. The Living School of the Amazon develops leaders rooted in their indigenous ethical values and cosmovision to foster autonomous leadership at regional, national and international levels and to influence global transformation.

The result will be a regional youth leadership training network, alongside a planned Escuela Viva in Peru, to usher an Amazonian 30-year vision or change throughout the bioregion. The School will resource young people to protect this vital bioregion by facilitating a leadership development pathway which includes:

1. serving as cultural liaisons, passing on vital learnings from elders to fellow youth in their communities
2. becoming earth guardians, protecting the land by coordinating campaigns, conservation, and livelihood projects; and
3. serving as community transformers, equipped with the knowhow and resources to transform themselves and their communities

Equipped with a holistic leadership pathway, students will assume positions as the next generation of conscious leaders at regional, national and international levels.

They will ensure autonomous leadership of indigenous territories. They will be rooted in sustainable ecological principles, ethical values, and organizational governance capacity that respect local cosmovisions.
